Youth Awards & Programs

Find out more about opportunities for conscious and active youth to get involved - and make a difference for the planet! This page also outlines various awards - some worth several thousand dollars! -- in honor of young people who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in protecting the environment and furthering social justice.

Action for Nature
Action for Nature is a nonprofit organization aimed at empowering youth to take an active part in improving their local and global environments. B Shimon Schwarzschild started the organization in 1984, after a visit to Italy where she learned that the precious songbirds of Assisi were being “killed and eaten by the thousands.” Dedicated to stopping the cruelty to animals and the environment, Shimon founded Action for Nature. Today, the organization still thrives on raising environmental awareness among youth and helping them put their thoughts and concerns into action. Its website offers ideas for taking action, provides nature-friendly website links, and most significantly provides a forum for youth to share their environmental success stories.

Brower Youth Awards/New Leaders Initiative
The Brower Youth Awards Program seeks to recognize exceptional youth environmentalists for their efforts. The award memorializes David Brower, an extraordinary environmentalist and founder of the Earth Island Institute, who passed away in 2000. Each winner receives a $3000 cash reward, which they are encouraged to use to further their environmental work and education. Moreover, they receive a trip to the San Francisco Awards Ceremony, a three-day Wilderness Encounter, media coverage, ongoing support, and a scholarship to the Bioneers Conference.

Bioneers Youth Initiative
Part of the annual Bioneers Environmental Conference, the Bioneers Youth Initiative specifically aims at supporting youth leaders and educators who are involved in making the world a better place. The idea for the Youth Initiative sprouted at Bioneers 2000, when Julia Butterfly Hill formed a spontaneous forum centered around youth and the environment. “Since then, Collective Heritage Institute has worked with youth organizers and sponsors to develop a vital program for youth at Bioneers and throughout the year.” The Bioneers Youth Initiative welcomes all to become involved in the program, and provides scholarships for those youth leaders who wish to attend Bioneers.
