| "It began in August of 1996 with a wreck that shoved
a steering wheel into my skull and changed the course of my life forever.
Almost a year later I was able to walk and talk and be normal again.
At that time I decided everything I had taken for granted had been almost
taken away from me, and I had to start focusing my attention and my
life on the real and important things." |

Julia headed west and ended up on Californias Lost
Coast, the longest stretch of unroaded coastline in the lower 48. She
recalls falling to her knees and crying the first time she walked amid
the giant redwoods.
| "I
knew then that protecting these trees would become a spiritual
quest for me." |
|
| The cutting of the worlds tallest and biggest trees
has divided California since 1900. Logging corporations have cut about
97 percent of the ancient coastal redwood forest that once covered two
million acres. Hillsides once cloaked in cathedral forests are littered
with stumps the size of small cars--testament to the cutting of wood
for uses as diverse as Victorian-era houses in San Francisco and modern-day
decks and hot tubs. |
